Crisis Management
Crisis Management
- explained -
The functions of a Crisis manager can easily be likened to the functions of a Maritime Pilot:
A pilot is a mariner who guides ships through dangerous or congested waters, such as harbours or river mouths. However, the pilot is only an advisor, as the captain remains in legal, overriding command of the vessel.
Just like the pilot, the Crisis managers job is to guide and advice the client through the rough times and act as a support to the regular management structure.
This can be done with an external Crisis manager that puts together a crisis team from the ranks of the client or by bringing in his own experienced team. A great advantage that an external Crisis manager has when taking on a new client is not only that he brings another perspective to the situation, but also the accumulated visdom of his previous clients.
A Crisis manager can also be contracted when there is no crisis, as a way to hedge for the future and train an in house crisis management team to be prepared for when they will be needed.
An experienced Crisis manager can take care of everything from restructuring during a crisis, to handling and training the client in crisis and media communication.
"You can not prepare for the unexpected, but you can be prepared to handle it when it eventually happens"
